Its been an unusual journey for Dr. Edra Stern. A former professional ballerina and performer with ballet companies in Pittsburgh, New York and Atlanta she has been a doctor specializing in internal medicine in Connecticut since 2009 and in 2015 opened her current office in Greenwich.
"I'd sort of reached the end of the ballet rope in my twenties" Stern said at her Greenwich office. "As a child, I'd been a tomboy who liked mud and dissecting insects, experimenting on spiders. After my dance career, the first thing I did was take a biology class.
The career change "Was a combination of good luck and having generous parents." she said. "I chose to explore science because my father was a nuclear engineer and my mother, a school teacher. It led me, unexpectedly, to med school."
Dr. Stern graduated from Smith College, went on to receive her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, after which she completed a residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center and a fellowship at the New York University School of Medicine, where she studied and taught patient-doctor communication skills.
"Being a professional ballerina is very much like being a professional athlete or hedge fund manager." she said. "There's a special kind of focus, lifestyle regimen, discipline and an attention to detail. Practicing in Greenwich, CT she brings that focus and relates to her many patients who live or have lived intense professional lives and need the quality and convenience of concierge medical care"
Dr. Stern lives in Fairfield county with her partner of many years, Marty, a former college level tennis player. She spends time in family activities with his adult children and her dog, Jax. She spends most of her free time at local farmer's markets or farm to table restaurants. On her vacations she likes adventure travel in US or Latin American destinations or European vacations where she visits extended family.
