Dr. Stern’s career started in professional ballet, with a move from Pittsburgh, PA to Manhattan at age 15 to train at the School of American Ballet. At 22 she left dance for Smith College, pursuing biology and neuroscience with the focus and discipline honed by years of dance training. Following college, she was awarded a two-year fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, working in a neuroscience lab researching the brain’s immune response to infection. From there she entered Mount Sinai School of Medicine, receiving her medical degree in 2004. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center NYC, followed by a two-year fellowship in medical education at New York University School of Medicine, where she taught medical students patient-doctor communication skills.
She left New York City for Connecticut in 2009, joining a multi-specialty medicine group in Norwalk and then opening their Darien office in 2011. She no longer spends her free time dancing anywhere other than the occasional wedding, but enjoys staying active (especially dog walks), learning to garden, watching a good crime-mystery and spending time with her long-time partner, Marty, and his three kids.
The importance of good communication and having enough time to both partner with and advocate for her patients led Dr. Stern to transition to concierge medicine. In January of 2017 she took over for Dr. Joel Blumberg, who opened this Greenwich practice over 40 years ago. She has had the good fortune to retain his exceptional assistant, Lori, along with the addition of a new office manager, Jen, at the end of 2018. Diane (Dee), joined our staff part-time in 2020, after a career as a certified medical assistant and cardiac echo tech in Greenwich. The four of us work together in our effort to provide great and personalized care – both when sick and in good health.
